WRAITHKNIGHTS ON THE BATTLEFIELD

So now that we’ve covered the options open to your Wraithknight, here’s how to go about using it on the tabletop:

MOVEMENT

This is the most important phase to get right if you want to get the most from your Wraithknight. The majority of weapons that pose a threat to a Toughness 8 model will be anti-tank weapons, and will almost certainly have an AP value low enough to ignore your armour save. As a result, it is essential to cling to cover whenever possible in order to benefit from a cover save, especially if your Wraithknight is not equipped with a scattershield. Ruins are your best option here, as they are usually tall enough to ensure even such a large model will be 25% obscured and will provide you with a 4+ cover save.

If you plan on closing with your foe to engage them in combat, use your Jump unit type to bound from cover to cover. If, on the other hand, your Wraithknight bears a pair of heavy wraithcannons or a suncannon, use your mobility to keep plenty of distance between it and the enemy army, making effective use of your 36” range (or higher) to stay well out of reach of powerful short-range weapons such as meltaguns and plasma pistols.

SHOOTING

Target priority is the order of the day here, and not just for your Wraithknight. If you can eliminate your opponent’s heaviest weaponry, your Wraithknight will be all but untouchable. However, such are the power of its guns, it is almost always worth firing your Wraithknight’s weapons first, as this will enable you to pick off any stragglers or crippled vehicles left in the wake of your construct’s attacks. This is especially important if such targets will still pose a threat to your Wraithknight, such as models carrying a heavy weapon or lascannon-toting Predators.

CLOSE COMBAT

With 5 Attacks on the charge at Strength 10, a Wraithknight can readily carve open any Tank, Walker or Independent Character in a single Assault phase. An Initiative of 5 often means that this will happen before your target even gets a chance to fight back. If you plan on taking the fight to a particularly dangerous foe, make sure that you stack the odds in your favour by Spirit Marking your target before you charge.

However, there are still a few units that even a Wraithknight should only engage if necessary: Thunderwolf Cavalry, Deathwing Knights and Terminator Assault Squads equipped with thunder hammers and storm shields – these guys will almost certainly come out on top in a scrap with a Wraithknight, so engage them only if you have already depleted their numbers and are confident that you can finish them off in a single Assault phase. If you’re opponent doesn’t have much in the way of hard-hitting combat units, then get your Wraithknight stuck in as fast as possible – forcing your opponent to try and deal with such an imposing threat is often enough to completely ruin their battle plan, making your life (and impending victory) a lot easier.
